DSI for the KMGBF targets
BGE+ attends COP17 with a clear goal. Almost a mandate. We want to convince the scientific community of the crucial value that digital sequence information on genetic resources (DSI) has to measure and address the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets.
About the KMGBF targets and COP17
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) features 23 action targets to be achieved by 2030 to halt and reverse global nature loss. Because the KMGBF was adopted in 2022 with a strict 2030 deadline, COP17 represents the critical halfway point for world leaders to measure global progress.
DSI – especially DNA sequence data – represents a powerful tool for understanding the natural world and for addressing the KMGBF targets. Key areas where DSI can enable delivery of the targets include measuring genetic diversity to safeguard species; speeding up biomonitoring; and meeting societal needs from nature.
But this is not enough.
BGE+ understands that further progress is needed to support the full realisation of these benefits from DSI. Accessibility to technology, Capacity building, Quality control of data, Standardisation, and Data Interoperability are five key areas where there is more work to do.
We summarise these ideas in a position paper that we will bring with us to COP17. You can read it clicking on the image below.
