Biodiversity Genomics Europe plus

The Project

Taking European genomic research to a new level

BGE (2022 - 2026)

BGE+ builds on the achievements of the Biodiversity Genomics Europe project (2023-26). BGE provided a foundational joint step in building shared capacity at the European level to accelerate the production of biodiversity genomic data and, ultimately, turn that data into genomic tools for effective biomonitoring, conservation and species recovery across the continent.

BGE brought together two then newly formed European networks: the International Barcode of Life Europe (iBOL Europe), which focuses on DNA barcoding, and the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA), which focuses on genome sequencing.

The model for scaling genomic knowledge production envisaged by BGE provides the basis for BGE+, which now also get the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF) onboard.

BGE will evolve from project to infrastructure.

Biodiversity Genomics: a revolutionary tool

Why BGE+?

Species are vanishing, ecosystems are degrading, and the policy-makers crafting the policies to address these challenges depend on data that is often scarce. Biodiversity genomics may well provide just the right knowledge that policy-makers need to face these challenges.

Connecting Three Communities for Biodiversity

Three Communities

BGE+ promotes an integrated approach to biodiversity research, combining genomic technologies with taxonomic expertise to generate knowledge that can boost research, conservation, and policy. For that purpose, the project brings together three large, complementary communities of practice: iBOL Europe, ERGA and CETAF

A Collaborative Approach to Biodiversity Genomics

How BGE+ Works

BGE+ aims to strengthening biodiversity genomics across Europe through an approach that combines community support for knowledge production, innovation, capacity building, policy engagement, and a long-term roadmap to create a sustainable biodiversity genomics system for Europe.

22 partners across Europe and beyond

Partners

Biodiversity Genomics Europe plus brings together three European-wide networks (iBOL Europe and ERGA), together involving hundreds of institutions, represented in the project by 22 participating partner institutions across 17 countries.
