How BGE+ Works

A Collaborative Approach to Biodiversity Genomics

How BGE+ Works

BGE+ aims to strengthening biodiversity genomics across Europe through an approach that combines community support for knowledge production, innovation, capacity building, policy engagement, and a long-term roadmap to create a sustainable biodiversity genomics system for Europe.

Strengthening participation and knowledge transfer: BGE+ deploys cascade grants to mobilise researchers across Europe, aligning activities with local conservation, bioeconomy, and policy needs, and onboards cascade-funded team and end-users in training and knowledge transfer actions, feeding back capacity needs that guide the innovation WPs.

Innovation: The innovation branch of BGE+ focuses on activities that aim to raise the effectiveness and complementarity of distributed efforts in two different areas: laboratory protocols and open bioinformatics tools and services.

Translation to policy and practice: BGE+ synthesises its outputs into policy-aligned roadmaps and use cases for biodiversity monitoring and management, covering both barcodes/metabarcoding and whole-genome applications.

Operations as a distributed system & Community engagement: BGE+ works on two fronts: Firstly, mapping user needs and existing services to develop a portfolio for long-term integration within the European research infrastructure landscape. Secondly, keeping interface with the broader communities.

Scientific and administrative coordination, ethics oversight and the dissemination and exploitation framework strengthen coherence across all strands.
