Six projects selected for BGE BIOSCAN funding

Last November, BGE opened a funding call for projects contributing to the development of DNA-barcoding reference libraries for species in Europe. Our evaluation committee has selected six projects that best met the expectations of the call.

More than seventy applications were received, exceeding our expectations, and demonstrating great interest for DNA-barcode reference library development across Europe. We were very impressed by the quality of the projects and the variety of the proposed activities.

The six projects selected by the evaluation committee were:

  • Barcoding of Central-Eastern Mediterranean Insects (Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italy)
  • Busting Caucasus Barcode of Life Database (Ilia State University, Georgia)
  • Inclusion of Lepidoptera from the Caucasus region to the DNA barcoding reference library (University of Helsinki, Finland)
  • Invertebrate Fauna of Bulgaria and Adjacent Regions – DNA-based Barcoding of Under-represented in Reference Libraries Taxa (InBuiLT) (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Bulgaria)
  • Understudied biodiversity in the depths of Dinarides (Croatian Biospeleological Society, Croatia)
  • Unravelling the Hidden World of Alpine Fungi in Italy and Slovenia (AlpFungi) (University of Trento, Italy)

We would like to thank all the applicants for their fantastic efforts. Due to the broad interest in this call, we will work together with the iBOL Europe secretariat to seek further funding to support DNA-barcoding reference library projects in Europe.
